The FJSL

Why we do what we do

Community, Culture, Science

The goal of the Fondation Jeunes Scientifiques Luxembourg has always been to offer young people a space to explore the universe of sciences in a fun, engaging way - ever since the FJSL’s first contest in 1971!

We enable youths aged 11 to 30 to find the answers to their questions by providing them with support, transferrable skills, a scientific approach and a network of alumni, experts and volunteers.

Our participants not only get to work on a scientific project they are interested in - whether it be in social sciences, maths or any other kind of science - but also get to present them during national and international competitions and fairs.

Our aim is to open the door to scientific research, and to foster a community both in Luxembourg and abroad that gives young people a space to explore, invent and understand the world and themselves.

As FJSL director Sousana Eang says: “We want to offer young people the opportunity to express their opinions outside of school and to learn to share them with peers in Luxembourg and abroad. For each participant, this is an opportunity to learn about themselves and through others, while fuelling their curiosity, self-confidence and autonomy.”

What we do

Throughout the year, the FJSL offers a rich and diverse programme to its participants.

During the annual Jonk Fuerscher National Contest in March - one of our key events - the participants get to present their scientific research projects to their peers and a jury. The event is a great opportunity for them to learn how to present their work to an audience but also creates new friendships and lasting memories! At the end of the event, participants are given a variety of prizes that take them to different places…

The prizes we offer to participants allow them to travel to many places all around the world. To name but a few, FJSL participants travelled to Mexico, Portugal, France, China, the United States, Taiwan, Morocco, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Bulgaria, Belgium, and many more, to either take part in science-based summer schools or to present their projects at competitions and fairs. We’re happy to say that our participants have often brought home many international prizes!

Our Science:Next workshops feature experts who teach participants the necessary skills to prepare their scientific project: there are report writing workshops, fact-checking workshops, etc. Though the primary goal of this programme is to accompany the youths in the elaboration of their scientific research projects for the contest, we also hope the skills they pick up will serve them in life as a whole.

Though we like to take our youths abroad, we also bring young international students to Luxembourg though our other key annual event, the Luxembourg International Science Expo, a non-competitive science fair that is accompanied by many cultural and social events!

One of the key values at the core of the FJSL is that we want to make science and scientific research accessible to everyone, regardless of their socio-economic background. That’s why we established Mobisciences, our science mobility programme. By setting up partnerships with other countries - like France, Portugal and Morocco - we enable youths who weren’t given a head start in life to travel through science. These trips, while centred around science, are also culturally rich as our participants get to discover the way of life of other countries.

How we do it

The FJSL would not exist without generosity, altruism and a wish - on national and international level - to create a scientific community in which young people can thrive.

Most of our funding comes from philanthropy (more about our partners here). We also apply for governmental grants. Our formidable board makes sure that rules and regulations are applied while our staff works hard to ensure our participants not only get the best experiences possible but also do so in a way that is safe et encadré for them.

The foundation also has several international partnerships with countries that allow for exchanges between students.

We invite you to join the next edition of LISE and become part of this extraordinary journey. Come to Luxembourg, showcase your ideas, meet young talents from around the globe, and experience an unforgettable week of science, culture, innovation, and exchange.
